What is a banks routing number, and do all locations of the same bank use the same routing number?

In the US, there is a central clearinghouse for banks where checks pass between banks. I’m sure it works different now than it did in the past but the basic are probably still the same. Banks can request one or more routing numbers. They are given numbers that have never been assigned and they are always 9 digits.. Any checks received with these numbers can easily be routed to the bank because of this number that identifies them. As for all locations of a bank having the same routing number, that is totally up to the bank. For small banks, they probably use a single routing number (although they could use more if they wanted). For large banks, they will usually have several. When banks merge, they usually keep newly aquired routing numbers and get them re-assigned to the new bank.
