A bed frame is the wood or metal outline that provides the foundation for a bed. It holds the mattresses and keeps the bed standing. The bed frame includes the headboard, the footboard, and side boards. On beds of certain sizes or specifications, the frame also includes a center support rail, bed posts, or other features. The bed frame is sometimes also called a bedstead. Though they can be made of other materials, bed frames are most commonly made of wood, steel, or brass. In most frames, the design is the same. Four legs, two at the head of the bed and two at the foot of the bed, hold up a rectangled set of shelves that provide the frame for the mattress to rest on. On top of the two legs at the foot of the bed is an additional board known as the footboard, and over the two legs at the head of the bed is the head board. The wooden foundation for a bed is known as a bed frame (sometimes it is called a bedstead). This holds your mattresses. It includes the headboard, footboard and sideboards. There may also be a center support rail, bedposts and other features depending upon the type of bed it is.
Usually a bed frame is made from wood, steel or brass. There are 4 legs, 2 at the head and 2 at the foot of the bed, that hold the rectangle shelf up that the mattress rests on. All of these different parts are either painted or stained. If you have a brass bed, it will either be made of pure brass or it will be completely brass plated.
Most bed frames are made in such a way that they can easily be dismantled and reassembled. As such, the different parts of the bed frame are usually attached with fasteners that are easy to remove. These fasteners include:
- Pin-and-hook fasteners: This is a slot that is cut vertically into the bedpost. Pins are then inserted horizontally and hooks are installed at the end of the railing. These hooks are usually a part of a plate that is attached to the rail.
- Bed blots: A hole is usually drilled through the bedpost. The bolt head is then inserted into the hole and covered with a plug. Inside of the rail there is either a dowel nut or another type of a nut that receives the bolt.
- Plate-and-hook fasteners: This is similar to the pin-and-hook fasteners but an eye plate is used instead of pins. The hooks are then inserted on the bed rail. You may need to have a keyhole fastener with this type of a bed frame.
Regardless of the type of fastener that is used, it will attach to the side of the frame and the headboard of the bed so that they can be easily removed or adjusted.
