What is a Bleeding Heart Liberal?

Today of course the term refers to an ultraconservative view of ultraliberals, as those whose 'hearts bleed' for the poor, who are 'suckers' for every 'sob story,' and who place tax burdens on all in a mistaken effort to cure social ills. If you ask Wikipedia the bleeding heart means a term, usually critical and politically loaded, for someone who is held to be overly sympathetic to another person's (or group of people's) plight. At different times most social programs have been backed by "bleeding heart liberals." By today's standards Jesus Christ and Buddha both were bleeding hearts. They promoted peace and overlooking the norms of society to do what was right for the lessees. Social changes have come because of those blasted bleeding heart liberals.
