A chimney cap is a protective covering which fits at the top of your chimney enclosure. They are typically fashioned out of stainless steel, copper, or galvanized metals; and come designed with a mesh screen to inhibit airborne hearth sparks, nesting outdoor animals, and damaging precipitation and debris from interfering with the overall safety and longevity of your fireplace's necessary venting system. Why is it so crucial to keep sparks confined to your chimney and these other elements out? While you are toasting marshmallows and sharing intimate discussions by the glow of your fireplace's hearth, quite a bit more is happening in the venting chamber of your chimney. The sparks produced from burning wood or faux logs will sometimes reach to your chimney's top, and if not properly stopped, can ignite the flammable material surrounding your chimney wall, such as your roof and house's construction. And all it takes is one airborne spark. Nesting animals such as squirrels and birds can ...  more

A chimney cap is a device that attaches to the top of a chimney. Its purpose is to protect the inside of the chimney from the elements. Most chimney caps also have spark arrestor screens designed to contain sparks and cinders, and to keep animals out. Multi-flue chimney caps are designed to protect the inside of the chimney and the mortar crown area on top of the chimney as well.  more

A chimney cap is a cover for the chimney that serves several purposes. Capping a chimney prohibits destruction on the inside from elements such as snow and rain. It prevents fire sparks from escaping from the chimney and landing on the roof, which can be very dangerous. Chimney caps also keep birds, squirrels and other animals from entering the home through the chimney and setting up a nest inside it. Finally, chimney caps keep out leaves and other natural elements that can be blown in during storms. A chimney cap is usually a steel or copper cap that comes in different shapes and colors and should be chosen based on the style and needs of the chimney. Determining the proper size for a chimney cap requires measurement. First, measure the length of both flues, then the width. Next, measure the width of the entire chimney crown, followed by the length. Finally, measure the height of the tallest flue, allowing for five extra inches above so that a draft can come through the screen. ...  more

Chimney caps not only protect the inside of your chimney but are also designed to protect the mortar crown area at the top of the chimney. Why do I need a chimney cap? The most important reason for capping your chimney is to protect the inside of your chimney from water which can lead to moisture damage. Capping your chimney will reduce the risk of burning embers or sparks from escaping the open chimney top and landing on your roof or in your yard. An uncapped chimney is an open invitation to birds and animals to “nest” inside your flue. These “nests” block your chimney flue and can result in a chimney fire. How do I determine what kind of cap I need? Caps for chimneys come in many different styles and sizes. To determine what style is best for your application you will first need to know what kind of chimney you have. If you have a masonry chimney determine next if you have a single flue or a multiple flue. If you have a single clay liner sticking out of your masonry chimney, ...  more
