A composite video signal is a combination of the individual black & white (Y) and color (C) components. In order to minimize the bandwidth used by a composite video signal, the frequency ranges of the Y and C signals are designed to overlap. This overlapping makes it difficult for each component to be separated completely upon entering the television, resulting in a lack of clear image definition.
