What is a Content Manager?
A content manager is an individual who manages a website that likely is updated with content many times a day. Though the position is similar to that of a webmaster and the two are sometimes used interchangeably, a content manger is usually different in some ways as well. Whereas a webmaster may need to be well skilled in HTML and other advanced web applications, the content manager may need to only know some basic HTML to perform job duties. The fact that a content manager may not need to know as much HTML code as a webmaster does not mean the position is any less skilled, however. It simply means the skills are in other areas. For example, a content manager looking after a news site may need to have a keen sense of what will be major news and what will not. Content managers simplify the loading of new assets as well as help organize existing assets. If you are familiar with FlatRedBall Managed DirectX, then the philosophy of content managers may be familiar to you. In FlatRedBall when a new FrbTexture is added – whether through the SpriteManager’s AddSprite method, through the TextureManager’s AddTexture method, or through the loading of scenes – the TextureManager first checks to see if any needed textures are already loaded. If so, the cached reference to that texture is used to eliminate unnecessary hard disk access and wasted memory on duplicate data. Similarly, content managers in FlatRedBall store references to a variety of assets. The most common type of reference held by content managers is of type Texture2D. Any FlatRedBall method which can potentially load a Texture2D works with FlatRedBall’s internal content managers. Content managers are also useful for organizing data.
