What is a Data Architect?

0

A data architect is a person designated to be responsible for the design, structure, organization, and maintenance of data for a particular company or project. Just as an architect carefully designs the blueprints for a building, a data architect carefully maps out the structure and organization of the relevant data for a company or project. A data architect can work for a single company and focus entirely on internal data or work for a database group and assist multiple companies with their data. A data architect fills a number of roles and maintains a number of responsibilities. The data architect is responsible for evaluating the use of data and relating data directly to the goals and practices of a company in a way that provides clear results. The data architect must ensure the accuracy and accessibility of all important data, and he or she is responsible for knowing what data is important and why. The data architect often acts as a middleman, deducing the data needs of a particula

In short, a data architect is the person responsible for the definition, structure, integration and maintenance of data in the enterprise. Data must be carefully managed for accuracy, currency and usage. The data architect must be able to understand how the data relates to the current operations and the effects that any future process changes will have on the use of data in the organization and must be alert to the need to maximize the data resources by reducing redundancy, enabling accessibility within security boundaries, fostering corporate understanding of the meaning of the data (meta data management). Also, the data architect serves as the liaison between users and the database management team and any software development/integration teams. An enterprise data architect must be able to understand and communicate the data requirements of any future infrastructure needs, working with the IT architects to develop an approach that fits the current and planned needs of the organization

well sailesh,(DataBase Management System) Software that controls the organization, storage, retrieval, security and integrity of data in a database. It accepts requests from the application and instructs the operating system to transfer the appropriate data. The major DBMS vendors are Oracle, IBM, Microsoft and Sybase (see Oracle database, DB2, SQL Server and ASE). MySQL is a very popular open source product (see MySQL). DBMSs may work with traditional programming languages (COBOL, C, etc.) or they may include their own programming language for application development. DBMSs let information systems be changed more easily as the organization’s requirements change. New categories of data can be added to the database without disruption to the existing system. Adding a field to a record does not require changing any of the programs that do not use the data in that new field.

DataArchitect, I think, is the one who designs, maintains tables, indexes etc. Also some one who is an expert in data warehousing and olap. I really hope that this thread does not get side tracked and I am looking for some fresh ideas on how to get good data architecture skills in the most effective manner.
