What is a DRA (Driver Responsibility Assessment) Fee?
A.Effective November 18,2004, Chapter 59 Of the laws of 2004 added new sections 503(4) and 1199 to the vehicle and traffic law that impose a DRA following convictions for certain violations committed in motor vehicles, boats, and snowmobiles (not ATV’S) on or after Nov. 18, 2004. This assessment is in addition to any fines, fees, penalties or surcharges that are already collected by the courts. DMV (not the courts) is responsible for collecting this assessment from motorists. DRA is imposed in the following circumstances: • When any person is convicted of any alcohol or drug related driving offense, or of a refusal to submit to a chemical test, that does not arise out of the same incident as the conviction. In these cases, the assessment is $250 each year for 3 years. • When any person accumulates 6 or more points on their driving record within an 18 month period.
