A floating floor is one that is not attached to the subfloor. Most hard surface floors such as hardwood, ceramic tile and vinyl tile are attached in some way to the subfloor. However, laminates are not. Laminate flooring is installed by joining the individual planks together by a locking tongue and groove system, but the laminate flooring as a whole remains unattached to the subfloor, so it is referred to as a floating floor.  more

This is a term used to describe a floor layed down on top of underlay (very common). What this means is that the boards themselves aren't fixed to the sub floor underneath, only joined to each other. This allows for the expansion or contraction required as wood is a natural product.  more

A floating floor is where all the planks are either glued or clipped to each other, and not to the existing floor. All floating floors require an underlay between the existing floor and the new " floating-floor". The floor is held in place by mass, but can expand and contract freely, by means of expansion gaps. 26.  more
