The 400d is now discontinued, but upgraded models are available. I have a 450d which is a good camera. I think the most recent update is the 500d. The 450 can still be found, I think. Canon and Nikon are generally pretty good, with plenty of lens choice from either the manufacturer or independent lens manufacturers such as Sigma and Tamron. Have a look at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ which has in depth reviews on all popular models. I agree the choice is confusing and personally I’d stick with the Canon or Nikon brand.
