Several of my students have had success in the gaming industry, and many more have made their mark in serious games. (Use of game development techniques and principles for non-game purposes.) You can teach yourself, if you’re dedicated, but a degree from a serious university will help you immeasurably. Be very cautious about for-profit educational institutions. They are there to serve shareholders. While the teachers often care about students, the system is not really set up with education as the primary motivation. Also be careful about programs that promise game design rather than game programming. There are really very few jobs for game designers who can’t program. There aren’t hundreds of game programmers out there waiting for good ideas. People became game programmers because they had good game ideas too. They don’t really need or want your ideas (unless you can pay them.) Your best bet is to learn some programming on your own and get involved with a reputable computer science pro
