What Is A Guided Bus?
The guided bus being considered for operationin Milwaukee is the Bombardier Corporation’s “Tram on Tires” system. FACTS: • This system consists of a three-unit articulated rubber tired vehicle (80′ long and 8’2″ wide with a seating capacity of 40, standee capacity of 100 and a maximum speed of 44 mph) powered by an overhead trolley wire, similar to light rail and trolley buses. • The vehicle is steered by a guidance arm that rides on a single rail located in a trench or slot in the pavement. • The system may be built with some “dual power” capability that would permit manual operation for short distances off the trolley wire. • “Tram on Tires” guided buses have operators like a conventional diesel bus or light rail vehicle.
