What is a HPSA?
HPSAs are areas or populations that the federal government has recognized as having a shortage of health professionals. Of note to psychologists, designations of HPSAs included a separate category for mental health professionals. All Federally Qualified Health Centers have a HPSA designation. The NHSC (and over thirty other federal agencies) use a list compiled by the Health Resources & Services Administration’s Office of Shortage Designation to determine health professional shortage areas.
