What is a LATA and how does it affect my ability to get DSL Internet Access?

0

A LATA, also known as Local Access Transport Area, refers to an area, identified by area code and prefix, where a specific telco is responsible for providing telephone service to customers. To date, DSL Internet Access is available from select central offices in the San Francisco Bay area LATA, Los Angeles area LATA, Sacramento area LATA, and San Diego area LATA. If you are not within 12,500 or 17,500 feet of one of these central offices, you will not qualify for DSL Internet Access at this time. We anticipate DSL Internet enabled central offices will be available in most of California by the year 2000.
