A linear actuator creates linear motion, like a piston. A linear actuator is best thought of as a mechanical muscle. The main difference between a biological muscle and a linear actuator is that a muscle can only contract, while the linear actuator and contract and expand (but often in biological muscles come in pairs so this is not really important difference).  more
