What is a liquid herbal extract?
A liquid herbal extract is a concentrated liquid containing an herb’s chemical constituents dissolved into a solution of alcohol and water. They are made by extracting (“washing”) the herb’s chemical constituents out of the inert herb fiber (cellulose) with a solution of alcohol and water. A good liquid herbal extract should optimally preserve the aroma, taste and biological activity of the herb from which it is made. Vanilla extract is a commonly known liquid herbal extract.

A liquid herbal extract is a concentrated form or liquid solution that results from a process of extracting or drawing out the constituents of an herb’s structural matter. The naturally occurring chemical compounds are then stabilized either by alcohol or sometimes glycerin which may have been part of the extraction fluid or added later to serve as a preservative. A high quality extract will represent as much of the characteristics of the plant from which it was extracted; characteristics such as smell, taste and biological actions.
