Papasan is a type of chair that is bowl shaped. A very popular item in the 1960’s, made a come back in the 1990’s and now again now in dorm rooms and modernized styles for upscale homes. The three-piece chair is made from rattan, which is a wood palm that is two out the three pieces. The third piece is the cushion which can be made from fabrics from suede to leather. The popularity with this particular type of chair comes from not only the way it looks but also the functionality of it. The round middle can move on its base since they are separate. Some are now more modernized and can fit two people rather than one in its original design.
The chair was invented in the Philippines where the materials to make the base and middle grow and still are imported all around the world to stores such as Pier 1. A simple way to look at it is as being a round angled futon. Now these days some bases are metal, though the wood, palm wood or bamboo style is still much a more popular item. They are comfortable and make a bold statement in a room and are a great gift for kids going away for college. It’s a great chair and the best feature about it is that it needs little to no maintenance except dusting.
