What is a paper-based database.. and the advantages and disadvantages?

I guess a paper-based database is just a database using normal paper (hard copy) rather than files on a computer (soft copy). An example would be a database of company’s promotional leaflets and would most probably be sorted by the alphabetical order of the name of the company. The advantages would be it is less prone to error and accidental modification. The disadvantages would be that it is very hard to sort out all the information and you might not be able to search for information (for example if it is arranged by the alphabetical order of names of people, it would be very hard to find the person who’s phone number is 12345678).
