What is a Percolation Tincture?
A percolation tincture is a method for making herbal medicine. The primary advantage of a percolation is the speed with which a viable, strong medicine can be created using the same materials as a maceration tincture. The basic principle is the same as that used in a maceration: plant material is ground up very finely and a liquid menstruum composed of part water and part alcohol is generally used. The proportions differ depending on which plant is being tinctured. The difference comes in the method. In a maceration, the plant material is put into a jar with the menstruum and the entire thing is left for 4-6 weeks. The jar is shaken periodically, and at the end of the 4-6 weeks, the plant material is removed and the liquid has become tincture. In the percolation, there is a little math: a formula is done that uses the exact weight of the plant material and the exact measure of the liquids used for the menstruum. A specific amount of the menstruum is used to moisten the plant material f
