What is a pergola, and how does it differ from a patio cover?
A pergola is any one of several styles of open frame or lattice roofs, supported by columns, either attached to another structure or free standing. Often used as a garden feature, the open roofs are sometimes used for climbing vines. A patio cover is very similar, but employs a solid or covered roof as protection against the elements. Sometimes called arbors or trellises, pergolas can be small, large, used to cover walkways, or even as extensions of homes.
