What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. In addition, they can perform cosmetic periodontal procedures to help you achieve the smile you desire.
A periodontist treats the different diseases that affect the gum and bone surrounding your teeth. Gum disease is now the leading cause of tooth loss in the adult population and as such we place a strong emphasis on its detection and treatment. A periodontist also provides cosmetic periodontal treatments. We can therefore also offer a number of cosmetic gum treatment options including: • Recession coverage to cover exposed tooth root surfaces • Crown lengthening to increase the length of teeth and reduce a “gummy” smile • Gum recontouring to correct irregularities and give a balanced, symmetrical smile.
