What is a PIN?

A Personal Identification Number (PIN) is a unique numeric personal code or password which is often linked with financial accounts. Banks and credit card companies use PIN numbers to secure financial information, but they can also be found linked with student loans, utility accounts, and other secured systems. A PIN usually has four digits which are known only to the account holder. When the account holder wishes to access information, he or she can enter the PIN along with another form of identifying information such as a password, account card, or name. Most consumers are familiar with PINs because they are used to access Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs). A client inserts a bank card into an ATM, enters the PIN when prompted, and then makes any account changes, deposits, or withdrawals necessary. Your Library PIN (Personal Identification Number) can be any 4 numbers without dashes or spaces. If there was no PIN in your record, the system will accept the number you just keyed as your PIN, and you will be asked to enter it again as verification. For security purposes, instead of seeing the actual numbers on the screen, the user will see asterisks (*) displayed as the new PIN is entered. If you don't remember your PIN, staff at any service desk will reset it. To safeguard your security, staff will need your address, birth date and your library card or a current picture ID. Acronym for "Personal Identification Number" A PIN number uniquely identifies a subscriber. Often a subscribers PIN number is their local numeric input number, but there need not be any relationship between the two. A PIN number is not specific to any particular unit, but is generally assigned to a particular subscriber. For Assured Messaging, the 10-digit phone number is the PIN. For traditional (One-way) messaging, PINs are not device phone numbers. If you do not know the PIN number associated with your unit, call Customer Care. If you are trying to message a subscriber and you do not know the recipient's PIN, you must contact that individual to gain access to their PIN. Our company does not give out subscribers' PINs. The personal identification number (PIN) is a 4-digit number that the PALITE system generates when you create an account. The PIN provides an additional level of security for protection of your data. Because an electronic record or transaction undertaken with your login information (email address, password and PIN) will be attributed to you, you must keep them secure. Your PIN is initially set to be your 6-digit birthdate (MMDDYY) until you change it to another 6-digit PIN. Students who were admitted to USU prior to Winter 1998 may still have a 4-digit PIN number (MMDD) plus 2 zeros.
