A PSS is an abnormal vessel that allows blood to bypass the liver. This vessel normally closes shortly after birth. When the vessel does not close the result is the blood is not cleansed, building up toxins in the bloodstream or kidneys. In other patients shunts can be acquired because of disease. Regardless, when this happens the animal will fail to thrive. Surgery is the best treatment and the overall success rate is about 85% What are clinical signs of a PSS? Some patients may have one or multiple signs. Some may not show signs until they are older. These patients may often develop stones in their bladder. They usually do not gain weight or grow as they should and may sleep excessively. They may have seizures. They may temporarily lose eyesight, pace or wonder aimlessly or head press.
