Privacy fences are barriers that help to shield a given space from observance by people outside the perimeter of the fence. Often, a privacy fence is constructed of wood or metal panels woven together in a pleasant design that makes it possible for homeowners to enjoy the front or back yard areas without intrusion from neighbors or people passing by the home. Along with creating privacy for the homeowner, fences of this type also provide a measure of security for the occupants of the home. One of the distinguishing characteristics of a privacy fence is that the structure is considerably taller than other fencing options. This is because the fence must be tall enough to prevent others from being able to peer over the top of the structure. It is not unusual for this type of fencing to be roughly one and a half times taller than the average American male. Unlike chain link fencing, a privacy fence does more than simply enclose the property. By blocking the view from adjoining properties ...  more

A privacy fence is a barrier that shields an area from view from outside the perimeter provided by that barrier. Privacy fences are usually constructed from wood, brick or masonry, recycled plastic or metal panels and used to define areas of a homeowners property. The fence panels are woven together or placed in a pleasing pattern and their use makes it possibly for homeowners or renters to cordon off an area where they can enjoy their yards without the intrusive glances of curious neighbors or passers by.

In addition to offering a private place for people to enjoy the outdoors, a privacy fence also provides a measure of security for those living in the house.

The distinguishing feature that differentiates a privacy fence from other fencing options is its height. Privacy fences are generally about one and a half times the height of the average man. The additional height of a privacy fence is meant to prevent others from seeing over the top of the barrier. Some neighborhoods have restrictive covenants preventing homeowners from building privacy fences over a certain height. These regulations are in place to maintain a uniform look amongst houses in that neighborhood. People wishing to build a new privacy fence should review the rules with neighborhood associations before commencing to build.

Installing a privacy fence requires certain advance planning. After ascertaining the allowable height, it is necessary to determine the materials and the actual site of the privacy fence. The site should be marked off initially with a hose and after the ideal placement is decided, the perimeter should be marked on the ground with spray paint.

Materials such as wooden privacy fences require a degree of maintenance to keep them in good condition. Wood fences should be built from pressure-treated or other preserved lumber for long life. They should be stained and sealed to protect them from the elements, to keep them sturdy and good looking.

Masonry and brick privacy walls need to be pressure washed periodically to remove mold and mildew. Metal fences need a coat of metal paint to prevent the formation of rust, keeping them looking good. Plastic fences made from recycled plastic are the most maintenance-free fences available, but should be cleaned or pressure washed periodically to remove residue that may collect over time.

Taking good care of a privacy fence will ensure it lasts for many years before needing repairs or replacements. A privacy fence offers peace of mind, additional security and ideal place to enjoy one's backyard safely and privately.
