What is a sand filter?

The sand filter tank is round or oval shaped. The sand contained in the filter strains the impurities from the water as the water passes through the sand. The sand filter uses a multi-port valve to direct the water through the filter or out to backwash. The valves are either top or side mount. Both valves work the same way. In filter position, the water is directed over the top of the sand bed and, as the water flows down through the sand, the sharp edges of the sand catch the particles in the water. The clean water is pushed out of the filter through the bottom lateral assembly. The laterals are finger tubes with slots which are connected to a center hub in a circular pattern which allow the clean water to return back to the pool and the sand and dirt to stay in the filter.

A sand filter is an alternative type of septic system used to pretreat effluent discharged from a septic tank. The sand filter discharges the pretreated effluent to either an absorption field or directly below the sand filter unit itself. A sand filter that discharges effluent directly below the sand filter unit is called a bottomless sand filter. This type of sand filter is only used where rapidly draining soils such as sands or gravels are present. In either sand filter type, a very high quality (clean) effluent is discharged for final treatment in the soil. The sand filter represents a tertiary treatment system where primary treatment of the effluent occurs in the septic tank, secondary treatment of the effluent occurs in the sand filter, and tertiary treatment of the effluent occurs in the soil. The sand filter is used to insure that surface water and subsurface water resources are not adversely impacted by effluent discharges from a residence or a commercial structure. Parcels wit

A sand filter is a device that uses sands as a natural filtration substance to clean water. Just like water in underground aquifers is made pure by going through various layers of sand and porous rock, a sand filter seeks to take nature’s own design and use it as well. Unlike other types of filters, sand filters can be very environmentally friendly products often used in swimming pools and even commercial wastewater applications. Those considering a pool sand filter should know that there are some very simple pool maintenance steps needing to be followed that will help maintain good water filtration. The most frequent task needing to be done is to clean the pool filter, usually approximately one time per month. This is done by backwashing, or reversing the water flow through the filter and then discarding that water. In some cases, it is recommended to change the sand filter so that it maintains a certain level of efficiency. Many pool maintenance experts and shops recommend changing t
