What Is a Science Adaptation?
Function A science adaptation refers to the way that a plant or animal changes over time to better survive and flourish in its environment. Adaptations occur over many generations, eventually becoming a dominant trait of the species in that habitat because the better-adapted animals survive and breed while those without the adaptation advantage die off. For example, over generations, lighter-colored arctic animals of many species out-survived their darker relatives who could not camouflage themselves as well. Significance Habitats inevitably change over time, most notably due to climate changes. If animals do not adapt to a change that threatens their survival, either the species, if they are mobile, must find a new habitat or the species will die out and become extinct. Many animals and plants do adapt over time and become better suited to their environment. Environmental conditions that trigger these adaptations may include extreme heat or cold, extreme rainfall or drought, over-abun
