The oven has a separate “cleaning cycle?which can be activated to start the self cleaning process, and the oven automatically locks during the cycle to prevent burns. Once the oven has cooled, it unlocks and opens, allowing someone to wipe away the charcoal left behind after the high heat burning. Generally, self-cleaning ovens are only available for home use. Because of the high temperatures which the self-cleaning oven reaches during the cleaning cycle, the oven is heavily insulated. This makes daily operation of the oven more efficient, because it does not lose as much heat as a conventional oven. However, the energy required to heat the self-cleaning oven to 900 degrees Fahrenheit (482 degrees Celsius) is immense. A self clean oven is one where you set the timer to clean and it does it. it gets very very hot and mine gets a smell, but the oven is clean after about 2 hours. there is also a continuous cleaning oven, that means as far as I know that whenever you use the oven the thing is also cleaning itself.  more

Be sure you take everything off of your stove top and out of the drawer beneath the oven. Everything gets extremely hot! You may even want to take the racks out of the oven - I didn't in my old oven and the cleaning process very noticeably dulled them. I have always removed them in the oven I have now, and just wash them in the sink. I prefer to clean the oven later in the evening when everyone is out of the kitchen and the outside temperature is cooler. In the morning just wipe the ash with a damp sponge.  more
