What is a Soccer Mom?

Her day may begin at 6 or 7 in the morning, preparing breakfast for the children. She ferries them off to school in a minivan or SUV and perhaps uses a call list to announce a rescheduled game or remind other parents about a PTA meeting. After school, she picks up kids from one or more schools and drops them off to do various activities, including soccer. On weekends she brings kids to games, prepares snacks and cheers her children on. This is the traditional soccer mom. The term “soccer mom” came into use in the 1990s, as a means of describing a group of mothers who might not work outside the home. Of course there are exceptions. Many soccer moms work from their homes, or hold full-time jobs. In addition to the duties listed above, the soccer mom is associated with political groups and alliances and has been used as a term to describe the voting demographic of stay at home moms. Most often the soccer mom may be parenting young children, while her husband or partner earns their single

The dictionary gives the definition as a typical American suburban woman with school age children, so called from her practice of driving her children to soccer games. Well, whether or not your kids play soccer, I feel that it refers to any mom (or dad) who is busy and tired! I grew up in the south, and now my family and I live in the Los Angeles area. Just getting around L.A. can be exhausting. It doesn’t matter where you live, though. Throw in a husband, kids, work, all the errands to do and a house to run, and pretty soon you’re stressed out, tired and have hit a wall. You know the feeling. For me, it happened around 2:00 in the afternoon, where I felt like I had been leveled and zapped of all energy. All I wanted to do was take a nap. Well, you know when you have kids, thats’ usually impossible. And even when I did get a chance to take a short nap, I woke up with that “nap feeling” of being groggy and more tired than before. I needed something to revive me and give me energy to get

A mom who lives vicariously through her children as they play soccer. She probably is an ex-cheerleader (or an ex wannabe). She drives a huge SUV or Mini-Van and decorates the vehicle with the team colors and name. Once on the field, she boos the opposing team, curses at the umpire, and yells suggestions to all her kid’s teammates. She probably is involved with the team in one form or the other. She may be involved in fund-raising, or might even be a coach…. She is a dedicated person-to a fault.

This is my understanding of what a soccer mom is: A soccer mom is an intense and highly competitive mom who lives vicariously through her children. She is yelling on the sidlenes at her children, the coaches, and the other kids. She has soccer magnets all over her minivan and would prefer to “pre-pay” college by signing up her kids in every tournament etc., in the hopes of attracting a college scholarship. She is also a bit over-protective and therefore won’t let her kids play football because her kids might “get hurt.” We have a theory that soccer moms (and dads) weren’t allowed to play sports as children. There you go. That’s my take on what it means to be a soccer mom. Of course, I”m a football mom, so consider my bias.
