A software modem is a low-cost alternative to a standard hardware-based modem. While hardware modems contain all the parts necessary to connect to the internet, the software modem transfers some of that work to the computer’s processor. Modems have two main components. Hello taken, A software modem is often called a win modem. It is a cheap modem that uses windows software to do most of the modem work. My laptop was always running hot and slow while online until I got rid of my win modem and installed a real modem. I learned mine was a win modem from some online site that identified which modems were winmodems.
