What is a standard gate size?
A standard walk gate is typically 3′, 4′ or 5′ wide, with 4′ being the most popular. If your yard is maintained by a commercial lawn service or you have a lawn tractor, you might want to consider the 5′ wide gate to ensure clearance without damage to the gate posts. The cost difference is minimal in most cases. A standard double drive gate is typically 10′ or 12′ wide, consisting of two 5′ or 6′ leafs. A double drive gate will include a drop rod on one leaf. We recommend using a galvanized steel frame on wood gates of 5′ width or greater, for greater strength, stability and wear.
It depends on the purpose of the gate.
Standard Front Yard or Entrance Gate
If it’s a gate that simply serves as a pedestrian entry point to your home, a standard gate should be large enough to block out most animals, which means about 3 feet high is a good standard gate size. If you want privacy, it should be at least 6 to 7 feet high.
Standard Backyard Gate
Backyards need to have a bit more protection, especially if they will enclose pets and protect the back entry to your home. It should be at least 6 to 7 feet high.
Standard Car Gate
If you will be using a metal gate as an entryway to the driveway or where cars need access, you will need a gate that is at least 10 to 12 feed wide to provide sufficient clearance. Keep in mind that when you back up, peripheral vision is not as sharp, so you’ll need enough room for error — especially at night.
I will tell you right away that it is an important task to install the posts strictly vertically (using a level) and simultaneously with the condition that they do not “float” over time. The thing is that if the gate posts as a result warped, the swing gate leaves will begin to find each other, overlapping, or creep in different directions. In either case, it is not allowed. To prevent such an outcome, it is necessary to provide a rigid bond between the gate posts. Ideally, when the bond is provided at the top and bottom, but in our case, it is only at the bottom, which only tightens the requirements for its installation.
