That is a highly defined legal term that basically involves some sort of economic loss. The most obvious example is the demotion or termination of an employee who does not submit to a supervisor’s sexual advances. A transfer or shift change can also be a tangible, adverse employment action if it involves significantly worse working conditions.  more
