What is a TWIC card?
The Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) is an identification card that is common to all individuals requiring unescorted access to secure areas of facilities and vessels that are regulated by the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA).PurposeTWIC is a security measure used to make sure that individuals working in the United States maritime transportation system do not pose a threat. They must pass a security background check before being offered employment opportunities.HistoryTWIC was created by the United States Congress through the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA), and it’s managed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).Who Needs a TWIC?Any employee, truck driver, merchant mariner or shipyard worker that works for a maritime facility or vessel that is regulated by the MTSA is subject to being required to apply for a TWIC card.EligibilityTo qualify for a TWIC card, an individual must be a United States citizen or fall into one of the e
