What is a vaginal ultrasound?
For a vaginal ultrasound, you will need to position yourself on the exam table as if you were preparing for an exam. You will lay on your back with your feet in the stirrups and knees up, with your legs apart.
A long wand then has a condom put on it, exactly as it would be put on a penis. A clear lubricating gel is then applied in most cases to the condom covered wand. It is then inserted up inside of the vagina.
They give this type of ultrasound to pregnant women most typically in the first trimester. They will also use this type of ultrasound for diagnostic testing reasons to get a better look at the uterus and that general area.
The vaginal ultrasound is an ultrasound probe (a condom cover is placed over it) and it is inserted into your vagina to get a better look at your uterus, ovaries, etc. It gives a much clearer picture than an abdominal u/s. It is not painful or anything, a pap is more intrusive than this. They will probably be checking your uterus shape and location and to be sure your ovaries and fallopian tubes look ok. best wishes.
