A writeable DVD allows you to record (write) data onto a DVD disc using your PC's DVD drive.  There are several formats, including DVD-R (DVD-Recordable, which can be used once), DVD-RW and DVD+RW, which can be rewritten multiple times.  Depending on your software settings, you can record video that is compatible with regular DVD players or video that can be played on computers.

DVD-R is a writeable DVD disc used for product development and testing. DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD+RW are rewriteable DVD formats which are not in wide use yet.
