What is abdominal aorta aneurysm?
Most of the prior answers are pretty good. To picture an aneurysm, imagine a garden hose with a big bulge in it. The danger from an aneurysm is directly related to its’ size. Below 5cm, there’s little risk. Above that, the risk increases the larger the aneurysm gets. There are 2 ways of repairing them. The first is a major operation where the abdomen is opened and an artificial tubing is placed into the aorta. 5-7 days in hospital. The second is by inserting a stent graft through the iliac arteries into the aneurysm. Overnight stay. Unfortunately, not all aneurysms can be fixed this way. Especially with a history of stroke and heart disease, the patient should see a vascular surgeon that does a LOT of these. Good luck.
