What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a complex branch of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It consists of the insertion of extremely fine needles into specific points (acupuncture points), to regulate the systems of the body and alleviate pain. Acupuncture points are located on channels, called meridians, which course through all areas of the body. According to TCM theory, Qi (chi) circulates via the meridians to every cell in the body. Qi can be thought of as a subtle energy or vital force. Health is dependent on the balanced and unimpeded flow of Qi. By stimulating specific acupuncture points, the normal balance and flow of Qi is restored, which alleviates symptoms, normalizes bodily functions, and stimulates healing.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of healing known to mankind. It originated in China nearly five thousand years ago. The fact that it is still being practiced today speaks much for the efficacy of this treatment and for the laws and principles on which it is based. These are nature’s laws and principles that underlie all of creation and apply to every human being.

Acupuncture is the Chinesehealing art that can be dated back at least two thousand years. On the most basic of levels, acupuncture can be described as the insertion of very fine needles into the skin at specific acupuncture points in order to influence the functioning of the body. Acupuncture stimulates the body’s ability to resist or overcome illnesses and conditions by correcting imbalances. Acupuncture also prompts the body to produce chemicals that decrease or eliminate painful sensations.

Acupuncture is an ancient oriental system of health care that uses the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific sites or points proven to be effective in the treatment of many health problems. These points have been used by the Chinese for thousands of years to keep a balance of energy in the body and this balance helps maintain good health. The acupuncture points were mapped by the Chinese over a period of 2,000 years and recently these locations have been confirmed by electromagnetic research.
