What is an AC solenoid coil?
A solenoid coil is a device to perform a mechanical operation from the energy of an electric current. They consist of a tightly wrapped coil of copper wire surrounding a magnetic plunger. The copper coil is usually encased in a non-conductive moulded compound. When a current is passed through the wire an electromagnetic force is then generated which in turn causes the small plunger to react in an opposing direction. The plunger can then act upon a spool (such as in a pneumatic or hydraulic valve) or diaphragm (such as in a water valve) for example. An AC type coil is one that will only accept an alternating current as opposed to a direct current. These type of coils are found in many applications from the home to heavy industry and even aerospace situations. They are a very simple device that performs a valuable function. I hope this explanation helps.
