Apprenticeship is a way to learn skills while you work and earn money. The apprenticeship system is supported by the construction industry. It is important to understand that an Apprenticeship is not a qualification in itself, but is a package of learning and qualifications combined with practical work experience gained through employment in a chosen industry. Apprenticeships involve a partnership approach. They are designed by industry, developed by businesses, training providers and Sector Skills Councils, and therefore tailored to meet the needs of each specific sector. The concept of an apprenticeship has been around since the latter part of the Middle Ages, and remains a viable form of training today. Essentially, an apprenticeship is a means of taking on an individual who will learn the skills and practices that are associated with a given career path. The apprentice is taken under the wing of an individual who is recognized and an expert practitioner of the craft, and over a period of years is schooled in all aspects of the career, until the apprentice is able to go out on his or her own and function effectively. The idea of an apprenticeship first developed as a way for craftsmen to train young protégés in a particular craft, with an eye of one day turning their business over to the apprentice. An apprenticeship is a mixture of classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Similar to a typical college, you would spend around four years receiving instruction and then graduate to become a Journeyman. Often times, you can get credit from your military experience to enter at an advanced level. You also get paid for your work while on the job.  more

Apprenticeships are nationally recognised training programmes for 16-124 year olds who have left full-time educaiton or are already in employment. They offer young people the opportunity to learn on-the-job with the employer, developing knowledge and skills and gaining qualifications. Apprenticeships include an NVQ qualification, key skills and some cases a Technical Certificate. On an apprenticeship the learner will train to NVQ Level 2 within a work place this will take about 12 months to complete. Advanced apprenticeships train to a level 3 (supervisory) while they are working full-time and getting a wage. This usually takes up to two to three years to completed depending on the programme. With a Programme Led Apprenticeship the Learner start the Key Skills andTechnical Certificate and also undertakes work experience with an Employer, before moving onto a full Apprenticeship. The planned training involves a progression of tasks on the job, under supervision, combined with Related and Supplemental Instruction in a classroom setting which integrates the why and how of the job. An apprenticeship is a nationally recognised training programme combining real work with learning and training, both on and off the job. An apprentice may receive a wage, whilst training and working towards the full apprenticeship. If an apprentice does not receive a wage they will receive an allowance from the government. All apprentices on a level three will be paid by their employer. In Scotland, all Modern Apprentices must have employed status, be paid a wage by the employer and be given a contract of employment. An apprenticeship is available to anyone from the age of 16, subject to minimum entry requirements and is often available at both level 2 (equivalent to five or six GCSEs, grades A* to C) and 3 (equivalent to three A levels). In Scotland, no minimum entry requirements are required, however, SSCs are encouraged to indicate the types and levels of qualifications that employers will seek in the recruitment process.  more
