What is an ATF?
An ATF is an Approved Training Farrier, and only ATFs may employ farriery apprentices. To become an ATF a farrier must have been registered for at least 4 years or have obtained the Associateship of the Worshipful Company of Farriers. He/she will need a fixed coke forge and premises suitable for shoeing a horse as well as a mobile gas forge. Before anyone is given the status of ATF they are required to attend a briefing on employment law, health and safety and equal opportunities. They must pass a test of shoemaking ability, and must achieve the nationally recognised L11 qualification in teaching and coaching. They will have to produce references from another farrier, a veterinary surgeon, and a client, as well as a certificate from their accountant showing that the business can support an apprentice. Lists of those ATFs seeking apprentices are available from the Farriery Training Agency.
