Erections occur when a nerve centre at the base of the spinal cord sends out messages that bring blood rushing into the three spongy reservoirs in the penis. The penis fills with blood and becomes hard and straight. Erection happens sometimes as boys fantasize and think about sexual things, or sometimes for no reason at all. It is very common for boys to wake up with an erection in the morning. This is completely normal and healthy. Having erections is not a sign that a boy needs to have sex.
