What is an Immediate denture?

An immediate denture is one that is made and inserted at the same time as your teeth are extracted. This type of denture is necessary to ensure that you don't have to suffer any time with no teeth to use. The downside of immediate dentures is that they have to be made as a "best guess" of what shape your mouth will be after the teeth have been extracted. They also don't allow for the natural gum shrinkage that will occur after extractions. For these reasons immediate dentures are really only considered as a temporary measure. You need to be aware that they will probably need adjusting, and you will need to have a new denture made approximately six months after the extractions.  more

An immediate denture is a complete denture or partial denture inserted on the same day, immediately following the removal of natural teeth. The thought of placing a denture on sore gums immediately after teeth have been extracted sounds quite uncomfortable. I find however, that the patient usually experiences less discomfort then they expected. The dentures keep pressure on the healing gums and protect them from the food the patient is eating.
