What is an interceptor sewer?
An interceptor sewer is a large diameter pipeline that is placed along a major drainage feature (creek, stream, or river) that transports wastewater by gravity (not pumped) to a pump station or treatment facility for disposal. Interceptors are fed or supplied by trunk sewer lines, which are similar, but generally smaller. The trunk sewers receive and transport wastewater from collector sewers that are usually located within neighborhoods. Collector sewers are generally 8-inch diameter gravity flow sewer pipes within neighborhoods that receive wastewater directly from household plumbing systems. • When will sewer service be available to homeowners? The proposed interceptor project will not include trunk sewers or collector sewers providing sewer service directly to homeowners. Additional projects to construct trunk sewers and collector sewers within developed neighborhoods will follow the construction of the interceptor. Some of this construction will be part of Annexation 2009 project.
