What is an ophthalmic migraine?
Some people experience flashes of light that may appear as wavy lines or “heat waves” in both eyes. These episodes usually last for a period of 10-30 minutes. These episodes are usually caused by a spasm of blood vessels in the brain. If a headache follows the visual episode, it is called a classic migraine headache. However, the visual phenomena may occur without a headache. These episodes are not harmful to the health of the eyes. If you experience these symptoms frequently, see your primary care physician or neurologist for further evaluation and treatment.
