What is anal gland expression?
Just inside the anal opening your dog has anal glands. Normally, these sacs discharge fluid right before the dog goes to the bathroom. On occasion, the glands become clogged which causes discomfort. A dog with clogged glands will drag his butt across the floor in an attempt to relieve the discomfort. It may also cause constipation. I express the clogged fluid by gently squeezing the anus on both sides on the glands. On overweight dogs however this is not always possible and they may need veterianary attention for expression internally.
