Autocrossing is a timed event where each driver drives as fast as he/she can around a course of cones in a large paved area such as a parking lot, landing strip, or even on a race course. Speeds are relatively low (fast autocrosses can get up to 55 mph in some spots) and the object is to drive smoothly and keep your vehicle under control which will in turn yield lower course times. Autocross entry fees are usually $25 or less and they are run by the SCCA regions in the area (namely Blue Ridge Region and Washington DC Region), NASA-VA (National Auto Sport Association of VA), and VMSC (Virginia Motor Sports Club). The risk of damaging your vehicle is very low because the only thing to run over is cones. However, since autocrosses are in parking lots there is sometimes the danger of running into curbs or other things that are found in parking lots.
