What is bauxite and what is its business potential?
Simply put, bauxite is the raw material used in aluminum production. At this point it is difficult to know how commercially viable a bauxite project in the valley would be as, although the basin has substantial resources, no commercial studies have been undertaken to access the business case / viability of mining them. As such, we have an overall view that the product needs to be blended, washed and prepared for production and that there might be logistics problems – access is from high mountains, down currently non-existence infrastructures, so there are difficulties facing the development. Only once a full feasibility study has been conducted will we be able to say with certainty that our current superficial impressions are accurate. In my opinion, there is more than enough potential to motivate for an aluminium smelter in the Malawi region, and now, with the inclusion of the Mozambique reserves, I see little reason why a feasibility study in this regard would not be positive.
