What is Canadas general position in the FTAA investment negotiations?
• Canada will pursue substantive investment obligations that will serve Canadian interests by providing for stability, transparency, and non-discrimination for Canadian companies and individuals that invest abroad, while allowing for flexibility in areas of key domestic sensitivity. • Canada’s main objective is to ensure a clear delineation of investment obligations that will serve Canadian interests. • In doing so, we will take into account our experience with existing trade or investment agreements, particularly those we have concluded with countries from the Hemisphere. The substantive investment obligations still to be developed would not prevent governments from regulating in the public interest.
