What is Canadas position with respect to the potential inclusion of a provision on “domestic regulation” in the FTAA services chapter?
• Some countries have recently proposed to include a provision on “domestic regulation” in the FTAA service chapter partially inspired by GATS Article VI. This could include provisions for qualification and licensing requirements and procedures, as well as technical standards. • To date, only preliminary discussions have taken place on the content of such a provision. • Canada is consulting domestically and issued a consultation paper on this matter in 2000 which can be found here • Comments and views by Canadian stakeholders will inform the development of Canada’s position in both the GATS and the FTAA negotiations.
