WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 (Reuters) – A computer glitch caused widespread delays and cancellations on Thursday to flights along the U.S. East Coast, a local Washington radio station said. Radio station WTOP said on its website that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said airlines were entering their flight plans manually, and that the glitch was not a safety issue. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world’s busiest in terms of passenger traffic, was the most affected, WTOP said. Ronald Reagan National airport and Dulles International airport, both near Washington, had no delays, it said. An FAA spokeswoman told the station the problem started around 6 a.m. (1100 GMT). AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of Airtran Holdings (AAI.N), said it canceled 22 flights, and dozens more flights were delayed as of 8 a.m. (1300 GMT), the station said. The glitch affected the computer system that processes flight plans, WTOP said, citing CBS radio news. (Reporting by Philip Barbara, ed

Some passengers said they spent hours on the phone with airlines trying to get the next available flight. “This morning’s flight at 6 a.m., I couldn’t take because it was delayed and also the 7 a.m.,” said Gary Mazzio from Chicago. Travelers that had their flights canceled late Saturday night were put on the first available flights, which pushed other passengers back.
