What is clinically severe obesity?
Clinically severe obesity, also known as morbid obesity, is a condition in which a person is extremely overweight to the point that their health is severely affected. Clinically severe obesity is associated with many other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heartburn, gallstones, arthritis, urinary stress incontinence, fertility problems, and cancer.
Clinically severe obesity (morbid obesity) is when a person has a BMI greater than or equal to 40 kg/m2 (or 35 kg/m² with other life-threatening conditions.) Obesity is a serious health issue because it is associated with early death and many other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heartburn, gallstones, arthritis, urinary stress incontinence, fertility problems and cancer.
